So, does competition brings the best out of you? Think again…
We live in a society today where we are constantly being reminded that we need to work hard to get ahead. We send our kids to various extracurricular activities with the hope that they can stand out to have a brighter future.
Instead of focusing on what we are good at and find ways to enhance that, our focus is placed on getting ahead than everyone else. We apply this to our career, social status, education, salaries, etc.
But, what if what we’ve been trying to achieve does not really mean anything to us personally and yet we’ve spent our whole lives chasing other people’s dreams just to prove to others that we’ve made it.. or at least on the social level.
Does Competition Take You Away from Your True Self?
So then does competition bring the best out of you or does it take you away from your true self?
In my self-searching journey, I came across the mystic Sadhguru and this is his take on competition:
“Supposedly you and I are walking, if we were in competition, then my/your goal would be to walk faster the other. If I win, I would feel that I am better than you and you would feel less than me since you lost.
However, what if you could actually fly? But since your goal was to walk a few steps faster than me, your focus was on that and not on what you were capable of.
It daunted on me that I’ve spent most of my life trying to “improve” myself when instead, I should have been trying to “enhance” myself.
What is your take on competition? Next time when you catch yourself competing with others, think again…does it bring you to or away from your true self?
Re-think About What Competition Do to You
when you live to win, your focus is on the winning instead of understanding your own capabilities or strengthes.=.
